Stephen C. G. Rappard
Following graduation from CCHS in 1972 Steve went on to Champlain College, graduating in 1976 with a degree in Social and Applied Sciences. Steve left Montreal after graduating from Champlain College, went for a trip around Europe and through a series of happenstances he ended up living in a cave next to a small village on the island of Crete. This was truly paradise and the cave was situated at the end of a long beach and was more like an apartment with a huge deck on the roof. A German couple had been living in it for a couple of months and handed it over to him. Steve was sitting on the deck gazing along this beach and his to be wife Lesley was walking along it with her sister. He got up and approached her and asked her if she would like to spend the next 50 years with him. Well, they are almost thirty years into the 50 and still together. He was on his way to Africa to work with a Safari Company at the time, but changed the itinerary and moved to London England. His first job there was working at Harrods in the Ski Department for a year, then joined Air France at Heathrow Airport working in ground operations doing everything from check in to VIP handling. He met Farah Fawcett Majors, David Niven, Rod Stewart, Princess Caroline, George Peppard, and so on... Needless to say, there are dozens of stories of chaos over his time there. He managed to get a look around the Concord and simulate a fire drill on an Airbus, and push back a 747 with a tractor. After taking a two year certificate in Marketing & Advertising at a London College, he then worked for a small advertising PR firm in London which was rather interesting. The firm was involved with all sorts of event production and PR projects... Benefit Concert for a Dental Clinic in Israel, Sourcing the appropriate motor yacht for a Saudi Prince, making arrangements for promotional campaigns. They had a chauffeur driven Rolls for a few months attending all sorts of events including Royal Ascot Ladies Day. The Rappards lived in Battersea, South London, renovating their townhouse. Loved the place but it was very expensive for the amount of money he was earning at the time. One day an old friend of his from High School called him in England and told him about Vancouver and suggested he come over and have a look at the place. Indeed he flew over and fell in love with the place immediately. Steve studied Quantity Surveying by correspondence in England. After a year, he was then hired by a company involved with the design of a new sprayed thermal and acoustic fiberglass material that needed work on marketing and distribution logistics. He assisted with the design and engineering of the product and the processing equipment to apply the material. It's become a successful company with global presence as being the best material on the market. He then got involved with structural steel fireproofing protective coatings and set up his own contracting company. Steve did that for 10 years reasonably successfully. He didn't really enjoy it all that much. He did however get a sense of satisfaction in participating in the creation of the sprayed insulation material. During this time as a contractor, he designed a radically new piece of equipment to process sprayed fireproofing material for WR Grace. He was retained for contracts with Boeing Military, Jack Nicholas, and became the largest sprayed fireproofing, thermal and acoustic contractor in Canada at one point. Steve folded the contracting company and went on to design the incorporation of inorganic chemicals into an organic manufacturing process in the wood industry to reduce the combustibility of wood based materials. In short form, he perfected the process of coating wood chips and wood particle with a chemical liquid called ceramic magnesium ox chloride. It was quite a study to identify ideal moisture contents, pressures, temperatures, timing etc... anyway, it worked and they were able to create a 1 hour fire rated sheet of OSB & MDF. First time ever accomplished and it was totally his idea. He didn't make a dime off that one. Shortly after, he Joined a Quantity Surveying company and stayed there for 7 years. He joined the Royal Institute of Quantity Surveyors and became the President for 2 years and stayed on the committee for 5. His time working as a project manager with two of Canada's leading Quantity Surveyors was a little boring, but it was a living. Steve thought of this idea of displaying the winning car during the Victory Ceremony for Formula one and for the last eight years he has been developing the concept. His company is now in the final phase of development of this project. The story of the last eight years is alone the stuff of books, not just for the creation of a new product, but the process of building a business, developing a market, conducting research with engineers at the highest level of Formula One, and networking with captains of industry globally. Steve didn't know anyone in Sports and Entertainment... no one. Through a series of meetings and networking opportunities, he has met hundreds, if not thousands of people who have helped him progress over the years. One thing Steve mentioned was that his time at CCHS were the best years of his life, next to having a family. Mr. Howe, Mr. King, Mrs. Wild, Miss Trudeau, and all his great friends, Frank Bachelor, Shelly Leushner, Julia Papucciyan, Steve Bradwell, Neil Stewart, Brad Sills, Jack Anderson, David Stagg, Colin Stewart, Linda Write, Karen ?? Pat Nason, Peter Crawford, etc. etc. were so important to him. |
